Closed-cell mat

A mat surface with sealed pores that repels moisture instead of soaking it in, easier to wipe clean.

A closed-cell mat has a surface structure where the pores are sealed shut, so sweat and spills sit on top instead of soaking into the material. That makes the surface easier to wipe down after practice and slower to hold onto odor over time, which matters in a shared living space where the mat gets rolled up and stored between sessions.

Most standard PVC and TPE mats sold for general practice are closed-cell, and they are the more hygienic default choice for a home mat that several people or a pet might be near. The tradeoff shows up in humid or sweaty conditions, where a closed surface can feel slicker than an open one because moisture has nowhere to go except the top layer.

The usual confusion is assuming closed-cell always means less grip. In dry, moderate practice a well-textured closed-cell surface grips fine, and the difference only becomes obvious in heavy sweat, which is why hot yoga practitioners often lean toward open-cell or natural rubber mats instead despite the extra cleaning that comes with them.
