Mat thickness

The depth of a yoga mat in millimeters, trading joint cushioning against balance and floor connection.

Mat thickness is measured in millimeters and runs from paper-thin travel mats around 1-2mm up to cushioned mats of 8mm or more. The tradeoff is simple: more thickness softens knees, hips and the spine on a hard floor, while less thickness keeps the feet and hands closer to solid ground, which most people find steadier in standing balance poses. Neither end is wrong, it depends on what kind of practice happens most often at home.

For a first mat, 4-5mm is the common middle ground, enough padding for kneeling and seated work without making tree pose or warrior three feel wobbly. Restorative practice, sensitive knees, or a hard tile floor push the choice toward 6mm and up, while vinyasa or balance-heavy practice usually favors 3mm or the thinner end of standard mats.

A frequent mistake is buying the thickest mat available to solve knee discomfort, only to find hands slide forward in downward dog because a soft surface compresses unevenly under pressure. That is usually a grip and stability problem, not a thickness problem, and it is often better solved with a folded blanket under the knees than with a much thicker mat.
