Hot yoga

Yoga practised in a heated room, which increases sweat and calls for grippy mats, towels and socks.

Hot yoga refers to any style practised in a heated room, sometimes alongside a set sequence, sometimes just a warm studio. The heat loosens muscles faster and increases sweat substantially compared with a room-temperature session, which changes what equipment actually works well for the practice.

Grip becomes the central concern. A standard closed-cell mat that feels fine in a normal room can turn genuinely slippery within twenty minutes of heavy sweating, which is why natural rubber and cork mats, mat towels, and grippy socks or gloves are common additions for hot practice rather than optional extras.

Hydration and pacing matter more here than in a cooler room, and a common mistake is bringing the same mat and setup used for gentle home practice straight into a heated session. Building up heat tolerance gradually and choosing sweat-appropriate gear from the start avoids most of the slipping and overheating problems people run into early on.
