Yoga sandbag

A weighted bag placed on the body in restorative poses to add gentle, even downward pressure.

A yoga sandbag is a fabric bag filled with sand or a similar dense material, placed across the shoulders, hips or thighs during restorative or yin poses to add steady, even downward weight. The weight can encourage a part of the body to settle and release rather than hover slightly above the floor or a prop, which is a common reason a restorative pose does not feel fully supported.

They typically come in a few weight ranges, and starting lighter is usually more comfortable, especially across the shoulders or lower back where too much weight can feel restrictive rather than calming. Placement matters as much as weight, a bag settled across the sacrum in a resting pose feels very different from the same bag placed higher on the spine.

A common mistake is using a sandbag as a substitute for proper prop support elsewhere, such as skipping a bolster because a sandbag is doing double duty. The bag adds pressure to an already well-supported position, it does not replace the padding and elevation a bolster or blanket provides underneath the body.
