Yoga Mat Thickness Chart

Mat thickness is a direct tradeoff between joint cushioning and floor connection: thicker mats are kinder to knees and spine, thinner mats make balance poses far more stable. This chart matches thickness to practice style and covers the material differences that matter as much as the millimetres.

Thickness by practice style

1-2mm (travel mats): almost no cushioning, packs down to nothing. Built for folding into a suitcase or layering over a studio mat, not for daily practice on a hard floor.

3mm: the thin end of everyday mats. Excellent floor feel and stability for balance work, popular with Ashtanga and vinyasa practitioners who prioritize grounding over padding.

4-5mm: the standard all-round thickness and the safest default. Enough cushioning for kneeling poses without compromising balance noticeably.

6mm: noticeably softer, good for restorative practice, sensitive knees and wrists, or practising on hard floors. Balance poses become slightly less stable.

8-15mm: heavy cushioning, closer to an exercise or pilates mat. Comfortable for floor work but genuinely unstable in standing balance poses, so most yoga practitioners avoid this range.

Material matters as much as thickness

PVC: durable, grippy when dry, inexpensive, and the longest-lasting option, but it is a plastic and becomes slippery with sweat.

TPE: lighter and more eco-friendly than PVC with decent grip, but less durable over years of heavy practice.

Natural rubber: outstanding grip, especially when damp, and the common choice for hot yoga. Heavy, more expensive, and has a distinctive rubber smell that fades over weeks. Not suitable for latex allergies.

Cork over rubber: grip actually improves with moisture, naturally antimicrobial, and a popular hot yoga choice, though the surface feels firmer than plain rubber.

Grip versus cushioning

The common frustration with thick mats is hands sliding forward in downward dog, which happens because a soft surface compresses unevenly under pressure rather than because the mat lacks grip. A thinner, firmer mat often feels grippier simply by not deforming.

If you want both cushioning and stability, the standard solution is a thinner grippy mat plus a folded blanket or knee pad placed under the knees only when needed, rather than committing the whole practice to a thick surface.

Weight and portability

A 4-5mm PVC mat typically weighs around 1-1.5kg, while a 5mm natural rubber mat can reach 2.5-3.5kg. That difference is minor for a mat that lives at home and substantial for one carried to a studio several times a week.

If you commute to class, weight deserves as much consideration as thickness: many practitioners end up with a heavier grippy mat at home and a thin travel mat for the studio or for trips.
